Supporting Independence at Tillson House Care Home

At Tillson House, we believe that maintaining independence is vital to our residents’ well-being, confidence, and happiness. That’s why we encourage and support our residents to do as much as they can for themselves — with a helping hand when needed.

Take Kathleen, for example. The other day, she enjoyed a lovely stroll to the local shop with Summer, one of our caring team members. Together, they picked out some delicious treats, ready to settle in and enjoy an evening of soaps. It’s a simple activity — but moments like these bring joy, purpose, and a sense of normality to daily life.

Why independence matters at Tillson House?

Being able to make choices, go out into the community, and take part in everyday tasks is incredibly important. It fosters a sense of control, boosts self-esteem, and promotes physical and mental well-being.

In our care homes, we don’t do for our residents — we do with them. Every resident is encouraged to continue doing the things they love, and to try new experiences, no matter how big or small.

How we support independence:

Here are just a few of the ways we help our residents stay active, engaged, and independent:

🌼 Personalised support:
Everyone is different. We get to know each resident’s abilities, interests, and goals so we can tailor our support to suit them.

🌼 Choice and control:
From what to wear, to what to eat, to how to spend their day — our residents are always in the driving seat.

🌼 Encouraging daily living skills:
Residents are welcome to take part in cooking, laundry, gardening, shopping, and other activities that give them a sense of achievement and routine.

🌼 Community engagement:
Whether it’s popping to the shops, going out for lunch, or visiting local attractions, we actively support residents to get out and about whenever possible.

🌼 Building confidence:
Sometimes, a little encouragement goes a long way. We support residents to gradually regain skills and confidence that they may have lost.

A home full of life

At Tillson House, and across all our homes, we strive to create an environment where residents feel valued, empowered, and at home. We know that promoting independence isn’t about letting go — it’s about walking alongside someone, giving them the confidence to live their best life.

So whether it’s a gentle walk to the shop, helping to prepare a favourite meal, or simply choosing how to spend the afternoon, we’re always here to support our residents every step of the way.

Because independence doesn’t have to stop at the door of a care home. In fact — with the right support — it can flourish.

Curtis Weston House: From Frosting to Fine Art – Residents Get Creative Together

At Curtis Weston House, creativity is more than just a pastime — it’s a way of bringing people together, sparking joy, and celebrating the individual talents of our residents. Recently, our residents enjoyed a morning full of laughter, colour, and sweet treats as they spent time decorating cupcakes and painting beautiful works of art. It was a truly heartwarming experience that reminded us how much happiness can come from the simple act of creating something by hand. A Morning Filled with Colour, Frosting, and Fun The day began with tables set for baking — trays of freshly made cupcakes, bowls of frosting in soft pastels and bright hues, and sprinkles in every shape imaginable. Residents gathered around, excited to get started and curious to see who would come up with the most imaginative designs. At Curtis Weston House, activities like this are always filled with laughter and conversation. Some residents focused carefully on their piping techniques, creating elegant patterns, while others took a more playful approach, adding heaps of colourful decorations and a touch of creativity. Before long, the room was filled with smiles, giggles, and the delightful scent of freshly baked cupcakes. It wasn’t just about making something delicious — it was about sharing the experience together. Residents chatted about old baking memories, swapping stories of family recipes and homemade birthday cakes. These small conversations turned the activity into something even more meaningful — a celebration of shared experiences, nostalgia, and friendship.           Artistic Expressions on Canvas Once the cupcake decorating was complete (and after a well-deserved taste test, of course!), it was time for something a little different — painting. Brushes, palettes, and bright paints were laid out, and before long, the tables at Curtis Weston House transformed into a colourful studio filled with creativity. Some residents painted cheerful floral designs, while others experimented with abstract shapes and vibrant colours. Each painting was a reflection of the artist behind it — unique, expressive, and full of personality. The joy in the room was infectious, and staff couldn’t help but smile as they watched residents proudly display their creations. Art has a wonderful way of connecting people. For many, the session brought back memories of painting with children or crafting during holidays. For others, it was an opportunity to try something completely new. Whatever their experience level, everyone was encouraged to simply enjoy the process — and the results were nothing short of inspiring. The Joy of Shared Creativity At Curtis Weston House, we know that creative activities are about much more than the finished product. They’re about connection, confidence, and self-expression. Taking part in art and baking sessions helps residents stay engaged, relaxed, and socially active — all while having fun and building meaningful friendships. Moments like these also highlight the importance of laughter and teamwork. Residents encouraged each other, complimented each other’s cupcakes and paintings, and found joy in seeing their friends try something new. By the end of the session, it wasn’t just the tables that were colourful — it was the atmosphere, too. We understand that keeping the mind active and the spirit bright contributes to overall wellbeing. Whether it’s through art, baking, music, or gardening, we strive to offer residents opportunities to express themselves and discover new interests.
